Each of us is faced with thousands of economic decisions, every day, and economics impact our lives in big and small ways. The study of economics covers a wide array of human activities and the functioning of our social systems. As an economics major, you will learn what society can do to improve your own and other people’s lives from a variety of perspectives. Use the economics Option in General Studies as a way to prepare for transfer into an economics program at a 4 year institution.
Economists use math to create and test their theories. When considering economics programs at four year institutions the math level they require for a degree will be important for the math courses students take at Montgomery College. MATH 150 may be a high enough level of calculus for some programs, but others may require MATH 180 and MATH 181. MATH 117 or BSAD 210 may satisfy the statistics requirement for some programs or may provide preparation for more advanced statistics courses.
Program Advising
Academic advising helps students reach their educational and career goals. Meet with your academic advisor regularly to discuss your academic plans and make sure you are on track to graduate and/or transfer. The program advising guide outlines the degree requirements and is meant to supplement the advising process.
Transfer Opportunities
In addition to pursing an economics degree at a 4 year institution, an emphasis in economics can contribute to or enhance the pursuit of other majors including: business, history, political science, public policy, and international relations. Please see all our General Studies articulations.

An economics major can prepare you for a variety of careers including economic analysis, civil service, financial consulting, teaching, lobbying and think tank work, public policy among other careers. General Studies degree provide opportunities for students to develop and hone their critical thinking, analytical, team-building and problem-solving skills. Students with General Studies degree will be able to successfully apply these skills in a wide range of careers.
