In a rapidly growing global, visual, and digital culture, moving images and storytelling through film and electronic media are shaping the way we experience the world. From documentary, to television, web series and apps, today there is an increasing demand for innovative ways to capture and explore the personal, the cultural, identity, and more through the camera lens. The General Studies film option will not only introduce you to the foundations of production and screenwriting, but you will also understand film and its wider, global relationship to culture, race, identity, and aesthetics, giving you a strong historical and theoretical foundation in the field of film and film studies.

Film majors will gain a series of highly specialized skills in filmmaking and storytelling, giving them a wide range of career options in areas as diverse as animation, graphic design, broadcasting, creative advertising, and fine arts, to name a few. Students will be prepared to be directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, and new media artists in this rapidly growing field where experienced storytellers are in demand. A General Studies degree with a film focus provides opportunities for students to be competitive in the job market by developing and refining their skills in critical analysis, research, communication, creative analysis, and independent thinking. Students might also advance their existing career by combining a focus on film with another degree, transferring their skills in production, visual literacy and creative content creation to diverse job fields from non-profit to for-profit industries.
