Since the development of our three-day workshop model in the 1990s, we have helped
some 20,000 people conceive and create their first digital stories. The genre, a two-
to four-minute short video—deeply personal, elegantly presented—has become a new form
of communication, ideal for the social media world we now inhabit. Come to where the
digital storytelling movement began, and experience the transformative power of digital
storytelling!

How do we go from the written word to a visual story? What questions might we ask when selecting media? Once we have our visuals, how do we go about crafting a visual narrative?
Robert Kershaw, Director of Public Workshops at StoryCenter, will use the backdrop of the nation's capital to help storytellers transform a piece of their own writing (something written in the past or something current) into a dynamic digital story with a specific focus on digital video production. We will critically and creatively explore the use of still images and video, consider why one might choose to use one medium over the other, and how, with a deeper dive into editing techniques, a piece of writing can be transformed into a dynamic audio/visual narrative. Included in the workshop will be discussions and demonstrations on storyboarding, advanced editing techniques using the cloud-based editing platform WeVideo, and time to walk the Capital Mall to take videos and photos and record audio to use in the production of your digital story.
