On September 27, 2007, Congress established the AANAPISI program to enhance the availability and quality of postsecondary education for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students. Montgomery College is proud to be a designated AANAPISI institution.

Mission

The AANAPISI Planning Group's mission is to raise awareness of our AANHPI employees and students at Montgomery College. We offer resources to support their success, helping them thrive and achieve their professional and personal goals both at the College and within the surrounding community.

The application for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) INTEREST - Inspiring New Transformations in Energy Research by Emerging Scientists and Technologists - Internshipsnew window has just opened. I’m attaching a flyer that you can use to share this opportunity.  The deadline for submitting applications is December 2, 2024, 8:00:00 AM.

INTEREST is offered by the Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy (ARPA-E) and is managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).

The program aims to provide students at Minority Serving Institutions with summer internships at the ARPA-E performer sites to collaborate and contribute to high-profile, high-impact next-generation energy technology research and development (R&D).

Will you please not only share this opportunity broadly, but also think of some students who would benefit, and invite them individually?  I know from my experience that a personal invitation often gives students the courage to reach for something that they might not otherwise have considered. The Solar Manufacturing Internship for Leaders in Energy (SMILE) Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO).  SMILE will provide an opportunity for students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to intern at SETO portfolio companies. Students will participate in professional development programming in addition to their core assignments, which will provide the opportunity to engage and learn about the development of innovative solar energy technologies. 

The internships will be held for up to 10-weeks during the 2025 summer with a tentative start date of June 2, 2025. Internships will be served on-site (remote appointments may be considered on a case-by-case basis). Potential host sites will include solar energy manufacturing small businesses and nonprofits located across the U.S.

Financial Support

  • Stipend: $850 per week for full-time participation based on 40 hours per week.
  • Housing Supplement: $150/week for participants will be provided, if eligible. Additionally, a housing stipend increase may be provided to offset high cost of living in certain locations.
  • Local Transportation: $30/week
  • Inbound/Outbound Transportation Allowance: Up to $1,200 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one way, from their assigned internship site to offset transportation expenses to/from the assigned internship site. If the participant travels by plane or train, ORISE will make travel arrangements and purchase the plane or train tickets.
  • You may be required to travel to Washington, DC for scheduled professional development activities. You will be allocated a travel/education allowance of up to $2,000 to cover those expenses.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

  • Qualifications

This opportunity is open to undergraduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Attend a Minority Serving Institution (https://msiexchange.nasa.gov/pdf/2023-2024%20MSI%20List.pdf).
  • Be a United States citizen, or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) at the time of application. Evidence of U.S. citizenship or LPR status must be submitted to ORISE at the time appointment is accepted.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an eligible Minority Serving Institution (MSI).
  • Have completed at least 1 year of undergraduate coursework at the time of application and be planning to enter the next year or semester/quarter of their undergraduate studies after the summer of 2025. 
  • Be available to conduct the summer internship at the external hosting facility for ten weeks.
  • Have coverage under a health insurance plan before arriving at the internship site and maintain coverage for the duration of the appointment.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Visiting Scientist Program is offering 10-week summer internships for undergraduate and graduate students.

Why should I apply?

What are the provisions? 

You will receive a competitive stipend based on your academic status. In addition, you may receive a Housing Allowance and dislocation benefit, if your permanent address is more than 50 miles from the hosting facility. 

Qualifications

In order to be considered, applicants must meet each of the following criteria:

  • Be a sole U.S. citizen. Dual citizens are considered foreign national and are ineligible for this opportunity.
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Meet one of the following conditions at the time of application:
  1. Undergraduate Student: Be enrolled as a full-time student at a U.S. accredited college or university pursuing a degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics or similar.
  2. Graduate Student: Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university pursuing a degree in in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics or similar.

Marine Energy Fellowship: Graduate Student Track with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is currently accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Marine Energy Fellowship: Graduate Student Track. 

What will I be doing?
You will get to advance your master’s or doctoral thesis utilizing the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at DOE laboratories, industry, or other approved facility to accomplish your research goals, all while networking with top scientists in the field. You will conduct research at both your academic institution and at an external hosting facility conducting research in Marine Energy.

Why should I apply?
In addition to advancing your thesis research, you will 1) enhance your education and training in water power technologies fields, 2) increase your marketability in these disciplines, 3) gain access to top scientists and state-of-the-art equipment, and 4) gain insight into research and career opportunities through your internship experiences.

Where will I be located?
You will identify the host facility where you want to conduct your research and a potential mentor currently conducting or directing research in an area of importance to the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), including, but not limited to, technologies for clean domestic power generation from hydropower, waves, and tides. The details:

You will receive a competitive monthly stipend ($2,500 for students pursuing a master’s degree and $2,950 for students pursuing a doctoral degree), health insurance or a health insurance supplement to offset the costs of health insurance, reimbursement for education, research, and/or conference travel and materials up to $7,000, and limited tuition reimbursement. A relocation and/or travel allowance of up to $3,000 may be provided for eligible participants relocating and/or traveling to the hosting facility. 

You must be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident and be enrolled as a full-time master’s or doctoral graduate student at a qualified program requiring a research thesis/dissertation at an accredited U.S. college or university with a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.

Ways for employees and students to contribute to the MC AANAPISI Planning Group

Our Planning Group is opened to everyone at the College regardless of your ethnicity and background.

We meet once a month and work together to find resources to help and connect the AANHPI employee and student populations at MC. These resources include conferences, scholarships, grants, and financial supports.  

Some of the AANAPISI Planning Group objectives include:

  • Research resources and services students may need to enhance their holistic experience at MC
  • Explore mentoring opportunities for students in these demographic populations
  • Explore internal/external mentoring opportunities for employees in these demographic populations
  • Provide external connection group information (community group, cohort, etc.)
  • Research external professional development opportunities for students (conference, webinars, local events, etc.)
  • Explore opportunities for faculty, staff, and administrators to participate in workshops, seminars, conferences, or other avenues to increase awareness
  • Explore opportunities to engage in community events
  • Explore opportunities to engage in collegewide events (e.g., AANAPISI Week, AANHPI Heritage Month) 

To be eligible as a designated AANAPISI, an institution must meet several criteria as outlined in Section 312(b) of the Higher Education Act, which include:

  1. Undergraduate enrollment is at least 10 percent,
  2. Enrollment of at least 50 percent of students with low-economic background, and
  3. Institutions maintain low average of educational and general expenditures.

  • Native American Pacific Islanders—The term ‘Native American Pacific Islander’ means any descendant of the aboriginal people of any island in the Pacific Ocean that is a territory or possession of the United States.

  • “Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander” includes Native Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian or Chamorro, Fijian, Tongan, or Marshallese peoples and encompasses the people within the United States jurisdictions of Melanesia, 
    Micronesia, and Polynesia
