Welcome to the Writing, Reading, and Language Center (WRLC). The WRLC serves as a resource for students, faculty, and staff and provides academic support services to students in all classes that require reading, writing, speech, American English pronunciation, and world languages.

We are proud to offer both virtual and on-campus support in the forms of one-to-one tutoring, specialized workshops, and computer lab access.

In addition, you can visit Student Resources to access writing tips, skills for success, and handouts and worksheets on grammar, organization, rhetoric, citations, and reading.

Tutoring Policies

  1. You can make a tutoring appointment using Accudemia.
  2. You can make appointments up to seven days in advance.
  3. If you are running late or are unable to attend your session, please notify our front desk staff at wrlc.tpss.general@montgomerycollege.edu or call 240-567- 3888.
  4. You are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, you may be marked as a “No Show.” Three “No Shows” can result in a suspension of access to tutoring services. Students must speak with the center director to have access reinstated.
  5. There must be at least three hours between appointments.

Zoom Appointments

During these sessions, the student speaks directly to a tutor and the tutor provides feedback in real time.

  1. To connect with your tutor online, click on the Zoom link in the email sent by Accudemia when you made your tutoring appointment. Or, log in to Accudemia and click on the red “Join Now” button on your home page. If you have any technical issues, please email wrlc.tpss.general@montgomerycollege.edu or call 240-567-3888.
  2. You may upload documents, including your draft assignment, your professor's written assignment instructions, and any prior feedback from your professor on Accudemia prior to your session.
  3. Be prepared to share your screen and/or take notes during your session.
  4. We recommend joining your session five minutes before the start of your appointment to troubleshoot any technical difficulties.

Written Feedback Appointments

For these appointments, you do not have to be present for your appointment and do not speak directly to your tutor.

  1. Once the appointment starts, the tutor will review your paper and provide written feedback via Accudemia.
  2.  IMPORTANT! At least one hour before your appointment start time, upload your assignment, your professor's written assignment instructions, and any prior feedback from your professor. Without documents, your tutor cannot provide written feedback.
  3. You will receive your tutor's written feedback by close of business on the day of your appointment.

In-Person Appointments

In-person or on-campus tutoring sessions are those where you meet the tutor in-person in Commons CM110.

  1. If you are experiencing any cold, COVID, or flu-like symptoms, please do not visit the WRLC. Instead, contact the front desk to either change your in-person appointment to a virtual one or reschedule it for a later time..
  2. Arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment to check in at the front desk.
  3. Tutoring appointments are scheduled on an hourly basis and last up to 45 minutes, with 15 minutes between sessions for the tutor to complete administrative work and clean between students.

  5. If you are going to be late to your appointment, contact the front desk at 240-567-3888 or wrlc.tpss.general@montgomerycollege.edu. You may also leave a note on your appointment in Accudemia.
  6. If you are more than 15 minutes late without notification, your appointment will be considered missed.

How to Get the Most from Your Tutoring Session

Your tutoring session is about your writing and reading, not a review of your paper or a proofreading session. Discussing your assignment and skills with a tutor will help you understand what your professor expects you to achieve and will help you focus on how to fulfill those requirements.

We recommend the following to make the best out of your sessions with your tutor:

  • Be on time to your Zoom and in-person appointments.
  • Communicate with your tutor, such as by asking questions or for clarification.
  • Bring your professor’s instructions and/or feedback, if available.
  • Plan ahead. Try to see a tutor at least two days before your assignment is due.
  1. No appointments are required to use the computer lab; just sign in at the front desk.
  2. Bring your own headsets if you wish to listen to audio.

Workshops

Together, the Writing, Reading, and Language Center; Academic Success Center; Library; and the Digital Learning Centers collaborate to provide a series of online workshops on a variety of topics. All workshops will be live streamed via Zoomnew window. Please visit the Fall 2024 Workshop Schedule (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window) for more information.
