T. Rex on Display in the Rockville Campus Science Center

 

A life-size replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton is on permanent display in the Science Center on the Rockville Campus. 

Visitors are welcome in the Science Center to see Stan the T. rex, who stands about 20 feet tall and 35 feet long. Montgomery College acquired Stan in 2019 through a generous donation from Discovery Communications. 

This T. rex is named for Stan Sacrison, an amateur paleontologist who found the original fossil fragments in the Hell Creek Formation of North America. The T. rex lived in western North America at the end of the Late Cretaceous period, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. It was one of the biggest and most feared carnivores of the era.

Stan is one of the most complete T. rex skeletons ever unearthed, with 199 bones discovered at the site. The skeleton has been replicated many times, but Montgomery College is the only community college in the nation with a model of Stan. 

“I expect him to be displayed for many years. Enough for numerous generations of students and visitors to marvel at him," says Dr. James Sniezek, instructional dean for chemical and biological sciences. "He is museum quality."

The Science Center (SC) is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Stan is located in the building's main atrium. See the Rockville Campus map for parking and directions.
