You should complete the ESL placement if:
- your first language is not American English and
- you have not completed 10 or more years of study in a U.S. school (elementary, middle, high school).
What is the purpose of ESL Placement?
To help you find the right classes for you to successfully start your MC English journey.
Where can ESL Placement send me?
This process can send you to any of these programs to start your MC English.
- Credit English classes (ENGL)
- English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP): This is an academic ESL program. For more information, visit English Language for Academic Purposes.
- ESL Noncredit Program: This is a pre-academic ESL program. For more information, visit ESL Noncredit Program.

How does ESL Placement work?
- Part I (Online): You will answer some questions about yourself and your experience with English. Please take your time and answer each question completely. You will write several paragraphs as you answer the questions. You will also choose a reading to prepare on your own. The day after you complete the online form, check your MC email for instructions to make an appointment with an ESL Placement Advisor.
- Part II (Interview): You will have a 30 minute interview with an ESL Placement Advisor. You will discuss the reading you have prepared, then you will write about it for 5-10 minutes. You will get your placements and information on next steps, which may include making a follow-up appointment with a Counseling Advisor.

Can I use the internet to help me complete the ESL Placement?
No -- Honesty Matters at MC
Cheating is a violation of Montgomery College’s academic policies, and this is taken very seriously. You are required to follow the college’s policy below when taking tests and doing the placement processes:
- Do not receive help from others
- Do not use the Internet or other outside resources
- Do not use your cell phone
Dishonest work on the ESL placement may result in your incorrectly placing into courses you’re not prepared to succeed in. This can impact your financial aid and slow down your progress.
We look forward to talking with you and we wish you all the best for your experience at Montgomery College!
